GR®54 - Tour de l'Oisans et des Ecrins depuis La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar, par le GR®54B et le GR®54C

The variants of the GR®54 are enhanced here with the Tour de l'Oisans et des Écrins starting from La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar, to explore more of the emblematic landscapes of the Écrins.

Setting off from La Chapelle-en-Valgaudemar, the Tour de l'Oisans et des Écrins begins gently along the Séveraisse river before climbing the southern slopes of the Pic des Souffles, offering uninterrupted views over the Valgaudemar valley. The next day's stage takes you over the impressive Col de la Vaurze, before an equally impressive descent into the wild Valjouffrey. The green Côte Belle pass leads to the village of Valsenestre in the Béranger valley. The end of this stage is a welcome break before setting off again on variant B of the GR®54, which is the longest stage of the route and one of the most difficult because of the steep gradients. This variant, via the Col de la Romeïou, takes you past several lakes, including one of the most emblematic spots on the Oisans side of the Écrins: Lac du Lauvitel (1530 m altitude). The next stage takes in the famous resort of Les Deux Alpes on both sides (Vénosc and Mont-de-Lans), linked by variant C of the GR®54, and reaches the pretty village of Mizoen. The rest of the route climbs up the mountainside, skirting the large Lac du Chambon below, to reach the refuges at the foot of the Emparis plateau. Above, the Col de Souchet offers a five-star view of the Meije. Nearly 1,000 metres of ascent and descent will take you to La Grave. From here, continue along the Romanche to its source on the Villar d'Arène mountain pasture. Once you reach the Col d'Arsine, the view is breathtaking. The high mountain world invites you to visit the glacial lakes of Arsine before beginning a long descent along the Petit Tabuc torrent to the Guisane valley and Monêtier-les-Bains. Destination: La Vallouise via the Col de l'Eychauda and the peaceful chalets of Chambran. Eight kilometres of carriage road along the torrent de l'Onde brings you to the Jas Lacroix mountain pasture. Crossing the Col de l'Aup Martin, the highest point on the entire route, is always a highlight of the adventure, and the descent to the Pré de la Chaumette is just as challenging. To reach the Lac de Vallonpierre, there are no fewer than three passes carved into the schist that need to be negotiated with care. The final stage is a long descent into the Valgaudemar valley, where the trail reaches La Chapelle en Valgaudemar to close the GR®.
