Hike around the lakes of the Emparis Plateau

A unique hike with a magnificent backdrop! Walk among a host of Alpine spring flowers (gentians, bellflowers, pansies...), mountain chalets and lakes.

The Emparis Plateau is like a natural lookout point, with wonderful views over the surrounding summits: the Meije and the Rateau of course, but also the Pic du Mas de la Grave and the Aiguilles d'Arves. This magnificent 2,900 hectare grazing area is home to many flocks of sheep and herds of cows each summer.

Drive up the gravel track from Besse-en-Oisans to the Emparis plateau (not recommended for anyone with a fear of heights) and park at the Col Saint George (around 10 km, 45 mins).
Now on foot, take the 'GR54' (French Hiking Route 54) Grand Tour des Ecrins, which goes down the small valley towards the information board marking the beginning of the hike (30 minutes). Start the hike on the left, towards the Col du Souchet and you will reach Lac Lérié in around 2 1/2 hours. If you walk a further 20 minutes, you can have a picnic at the Lac Noir, enjoying the fabulous views over the Ecrins summits. If it has not been drained, you'll also pass by Lake Cristallin before finishing the circular hike.

Picnicing in the mountains

Here are some ideas for high-altitude picnics, with a view that you will remember long after the final crumbs have been swept away. You’ll find grassy slopes for doing somersaults and plenty of altitude sun to help you digest the fine Oisans produce.
