Guided visit of the Mill of Villar d'Arène

Visit the mill, a true eco-museum representative of the life and tradition of the Faranchins' people. It is a long building dating from the early eighteenth century. You will see an extraordinary amount of tools and artefacts representative of the past.

Since 2017, the mill belongs to Villar d'Arène and is located on the Arsine road next to the river Romanche. It was used in the past to grind cereals. Indeed, inside you will be lucky enough to see millwheels, millstones, an old miller kitchen and tools. They closed it in 1950 and since then it has been restored by his passionate former owner, Mr Mathonnet Maurice, the mill comes with an incredible amount of tools and artefacts. A great visit to do with our local guide that will be also be able to show you the municipal oven.

'Lo Po Bulli'
Villar d'Arene has preserved a very old tradition of 'Pain Boulli' (Boiled Bred) made of rye flour and water.

Currently, people share this moment of respect for tradition and conviviality during its manufacture, the third weekend of November (even TV journalist came to make a documentary-film about this tradition).Guided tours are organized by the Association of the Villar d'Arène's old Community Oven,to transmit a testimony to this life of the past. A film 'Alpine Village' made in 1958 is also presented durind the visit.(Marcel Maget, an anthropologist wrote a thesis about the 'Po Boulli').

The land of the Meije (Circuit n°16)

The village of La Grave, a temple for mountaineers and ofpiste skiers, is known the world over. However, due to its particularly tortuous access, this village was only linked to the rest of the world by road during the second half of the 20th century.
